Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association pushes for stronger sustainability frameworks
The Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association (APDCA) has started a brand-new white paper calling for tougher regulation and market cooperation to enhance energy sustainability across data centers in the area.
Driven by cloud fostering, digital services and artificial intelligence (AI), local demand for data hubs is predicted to grow almost 20% each year through 2028. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projections that Southeast Asia’s information centre electricity use will almost double by 2030 compared to 2024– a pattern mirrored throughout the bigger APAC area.
” Balancing power sustainability with the rising need for electronic facilities is just one of APAC’s defining challenges,” says Jeremy Deutsch, chair of APDCA. “With the ideal policy frameworks, Asia-Pacific governments can guarantee that digital transformation advances hand in hand with net-zero ambitions.”
Developers are urged to work together very closely with regulatory authorities and market partners to develop constant energy effectiveness standards throughout the APAC markets.
The APDCA participants involve leading international providers, such as AirTrunk, Equinix, Digital Realty, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, and Princeton Digital Group.
The white paper emphasize best techniques to improve power performance throughout the data centre lifecycle– from spot selection, design and construction to operations and monitoring. It also advises policy steps to speed up accessibility to clean and renewable energy through stronger grid infrastructure and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Titled Data Centres and Energy Sustainability: A Regional Perspective on Best Practices and Policy Frameworks, the paper was released on Oct 27 and outlines strategies to lower the environmental effect of information facilities while satisfying the surging requirement for digital framework in Asia-Pacific (APAC).
Amongst the examples mentioned is Singapore’s BCA-IMDA Green Mark for Data Centres (GMDC)– a qualification scheme collectively developed by the Infocomm Media Advancement Authority (IMDA) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to recognise data centres with solid sustainability functionality and energy-efficient practices.
